Music festival targets foodies
Alcohol-fueled bands, partying teens, and mud-soaked gumboots are usually what come to mind when thinking of music festivals.
But now a big weekend camping festival is hoping to associate great boutique food with the fun, too.
The six-year-old Playground Weekender is targeting a host of well known boutique brands, like Miss Chu's, Grill'd and roving truck chain Cantina, in 2012 via its "get forked" initiative.
"This year we want to celebrate the marriage of good food and music and
make sure that The Playground Weekender has more flavour than regular
festivals," says Andy Rigby, promoter of the festival.
The remarkable success of finger food heaven, Miss Chu's, from Sydney is set up a pop-up Vietnamese village, complete with farmyard animals, at the make-shift camping site on the Hawkesbury River.
"Enjoy this high end nosh including awesome dumplings and refreshing crushes, like coconut, bananna and mint," says Rigby.
For those who like it hot, Cantina Mobil food van plans to offer punters six-hour slow-roasted gourmet Mexican fare.
Gourmet chain Grill'd is also serving up hot food for party animals with a selection of its burgers and other fast food fare.
And then there's the Veggie Patch; the brainchild of design studio TMOD and Yulli’s restaurant in Sydney.
The Veggie Patch is devoted to providing high quality vegetarian food using ingredients sourced from local producers.
"With a whole foods philosophy, using unprocessed and unrefined ingredients, the stall’s output has a minimal impact on the environment from their packaging to ingredients," says Rigby.
But what would a weekend festival be without a bit of a tipple?
Also appearing this year is a beer and cider garden, complete with Magners Irish Cider and Coopers Pale Ale on tap alongside the more regular fare of wines and spirits.
Playground Weekender is a large bohemian-style festival in rural NSW with an alternative music focus.
Playing this year are acts like Roots Manuva, Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, Black Lips, Canyons, Boy & Bear, and Chic featuring Nile Rodgers.
It is also famous for its dress up night and other non-music components, such as comedy acts. |
