Organically awarding food
Two Sydney based businesses and an iconic Melbourne market are amongst the names awarded top gongs in this year's national Organic Week Consumer Choice Awards.

One of the winners, Honest to Goodness, is Sydney's leading supplier of organic food and wholefood. Their success in online retail has been consummated with the award of the Best National Organic Shopping Website.

Similarly, the Woolworths Caringbah Store in Sydney received the Best National Conventional Supermarket, with an Organic offer award for the range and accessibility of organic goods they provide.

The Queen Victoria Markets - often recognized as Melbourne's premier open-air market - won the Best National Organic Market award. It draws in millions of visitors each year, and is best known for its huge variety of fresh produce and organic products.

Another winner, City Organics, a popular Eco-Grocer and Natural Beauty Store based in Hobart, won best National Organic Retail Outlet, whilst all stores of the Endota Spa were awarded the Best National Organic Specialist store for their committment to protecting, preserving and nurturing the Australian environment through their use of organic products.

These awards were all part of National Organic Week which was held last October, culminating in the announcement of awards in earlier this month. The line up included organic events and celebrations across the country that advocated the benefits of buying organic products, whilst also promoting public awareness for the organic cause.

"Taste the difference. Feel the difference. Make a difference," says Eric Love, the organiser and director of the Centre for Organic Resource Enterprises (CORE), of the festival's message.

"The message is designed to be an anthem to the impact organic products and systems can have on our lifestyles, health and the future sustainability of our society."

Highlights of the week included Fresh Food Workshops in Sydney and Organic Wine Tasting in Strathmore, but the most exciting event remained the industry's annual retail industry awards, the 2011 National Organic Week Consumer Choice Awards (the OCCA's).

The awards recognised some of Australia's best organic retail and online businesses. For the very first time, consumers were able to vote for their favourite organic store on the NOW Facebook page during the first two weeks of October, with national and state winners selected according to the number of votes collected from consumers.

28 businesses received a national and state NOW organic Consumer Choice Awards for 2011. Here's the full list...

City Organics, (Hobart) - Best National Organic Retail Outlet
Endota Spa (all stores) - Best National Organic Specialist store
Honest to Goodness (Sydney) - Best National Organic Shopping Website
Queen Victoria Market (Melbourne) - Best National Organic Market
Woolworths Caringbah Store (Sydney) - Best National Conventional Supermarket with an Organic offer.

Notable winners on a State level include Nature's Child (Best Organic Retail Outlet, NSW), Queen Victoria Market (Best Organic Market, VIC) and Woolworths Caringbah, Ashgrove and South Yarra which won the Best Conventional Supermarket with an Organic offer for NSW, QLD and VIC respectively.

"NOW Organic Consumer Choice Awards are about stimulating demand for organic food and to give farmers confidence the market is a sustainable one," says Eric.

National Organic Week 2012 will be held next year on 5-14 October with the new consumer-friendly approach to voting through Facebook and other social media sites to continue.
